Herbal Roll-On Therapy: A Natural Approach to Headache Management (Research Article)

Abstract: Headache and migraine are among the most disabling neurological conditions globally, affecting over 50% of the world population and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. While conventional pharmacotherapy offers symptomatic relief, the prolonged use of analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with significant adverse effects including gastric ulceration, hepatotoxicity, and medication-overuse headache. The present study aimed to formulate, develop, and evaluate a polyherbal roll-on topical preparation incorporating peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, clove oil, camphor, jojoba oil, glycerine, and vitamin E for the management of headache, migraine, stress, nasal congestion, and mild musculoskeletal pain. The formulation was prepared by a simple blending method. Physicochemical evaluation included organoleptic properties, pH determination, homogeneity, spreadability, skin irritation testing, microbial limit testing, stability under ICH recommended conditions, and container integrity assessment. The roll-on demonstrated a pleasant aromatic odor, clear homogeneous appearance, skin-compatible pH (5.5–7.0), excellent spreadability, and absence of irritation. No microbial growth or leakage was recorded. Stability testing under accelerated conditions (40 ± 2°C/75% RH) confirmed no significant changes in physical or chemical characteristics. The developed herbal roll-on represents a safe, stable, economical, and user-friendly natural alternative for topical headache and pain management. Its synergistic phytochemical composition offers multi-modal therapeutic action, making it a promising candidate for further clinical investigation.
