Exploring The Medicinal Potential of Trombidium: A Comprehensive Review (Review Article)

Abstract: The red velvet mites of the genus Trombidium, known for their striking appearance and ecological roles, are now drawing attention for their potential therapeutic benefits. Traditionally used in systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine, these mites—particularly Trombidium grandissimum have been applied in managing conditions such as paralysis, joint pain, skin disorders, and sexual debility. This review brings together the available scientific and ethnomedical literature to explore the medicinal promise of Trombidium species. Research findings suggest that these mites contain a variety of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and immunomodulatory properties. Recent studies using ethanolic extracts of T. grandissimum have demonstrated significant anxiolytic and neuroprotective activity in animal models, with performance comparable to standard drugs and no observable toxicity at therapeutic doses. Despite these encouraging results, major gaps remain—particularly in compound isolation, clinical validation, and safety profiling. This review highlights the importance of bridging traditional knowledge with modern pharmacological research to better understand and harness the medicinal value of Trombidium. With focused scientific efforts, these underexplored mites may offer a novel source of safe and effective agents for future drug development.
